I just finished watching a really sweet BL drama, Cherry Magic! Thirty Years of Virginity Can Make You a Wizard?!

The MC, Adachi (seated on the right), is a shy ball of anxiety. On the left is Kurosawa, suave, handsome, basically an angel, and absolutely besotted with Adachi. They work at the same company, but Adachi has zero idea that someone like Kurosawa could actually like him. But then Adachi turns 30, and because he is still a virgin, he acquires the magic to suddenly start hearing people's thoughts when he touches them. Inevitably, he touches Kurosawa and learns about his feelings for him.

Admittedly, the premise is a bit ridiculous, but it leads to a lot of funny moments and never goes in a dark or icky direction, mostly because Adachi is a very sweet and unassuming person. Instead, his power helps him come out of his shell and connect with people.

It reminded me of HIStory:Trapped in that it is packed with a ton of tropes but in a good way. The leads also have good chemistry, and every time Kurosawa gets his heart broken, yours breaks too. But it actually isn't super angsty, and it has a wonderful happy ending. It also avoids all the more unfortunate BL tropes, and Kurosawa and Adachi do things like talk about the importance of communication and their feelings. I think some people don't like the B couple, Tsuge and Minato, but I did--there were a lot of hilarious moments with them, and although the actor who plays Tsuge sometimes was too over the top, overall I liked them. It also had the bonus of a female character who I read as aro/ace, which was awesome.

12 eps--they're all on Crunchyroll, not sure about other sites. But I definitely recommend it!

Dear Seasons of Anime creator,

Thank you so much for creating a gift for me!

Although I selected Future/Time Skip AU on my form, I would also be happy with a Mythical Creatures AU. The following suggestions are just that--suggestions. Feel free to go wherever your muse takes you.

Daiya no Ace: Furuya & Sawamura

I am caught up through the current anime season but have not read further in the manga. I love Furuya and Sawamura's relationship. How they both challenge each other to do better, how they help each other out (even if they often hide that fact behind aggressive posturing), how they admire and respect each other. I'd like to see how their relationship develops in the future, maybe when they are both in pro baseball. You do not need to include any romantic pairings for either of them, although I am fond of Sawamura/Miyuki, but if you do, I'd prefer those to be in the background, with the focus on the friendship between these two.

If you go with a Mythical Creatures AU-- I can see lots of potential for humor in that situation with both of them still competing like crazy no matter the circumstances.

Haikyuu: Kageyama & Oikawa

I am caught up through the current anime season but have not read further in the manga. Kageyama and Oikawa have such a complicated relationship with a lot of layers. It's clear that even though Oikawa resents the hell out of Kageyama, he also admires him and is proud of his kouhai. I'd love to see their relationship explored in the future when they are adults and have matured a bit. they can still be playing volleyball or not. I think one of the keys of Kageyama's character is his social awkwardness and blunt nature, so I'd love it if that can still be a part of him. Again, if you want to include romantic pairings in the background, that's fine, but I do NOT want any Kageyama/Hinata.

If you go with a Mythical Creatures AU-- I could imagine a scenario that parallels canon where Kageyama is Oikawa's junior, needing to learn from him and Oikawa being resentful. I think you could go in either a humorous or angsty direction.

Yuri on Ice!: Christophe/Georgi

They're my favorite YOI rarepair. They're both such drama queens and super romantic, and I'd love a future fic of either established relationship or getting together. I feel like they would try to out-compete the other with over the top romantic gestures. For a bit more angst, it could be interesting to set it when they are both retiring/retired from skating. I image Georgi is a bit older than Christophe, and Georgi might feel some anxiety there. Although I don't mind some smut, I'd prefer it if the fic is not pwp porn.

If you go with a Mythical Creatures AU-- have fun with their diva personalities in that setting!

Dear Sutcliff Swap creator,

Thank you for creating a gift for me!! The following (except for my DNW) are suggestions only--feel free to go where your muse takes you.

In general, I am very fond of h/c and historical details.  For this fest, I do not want rape/non-con (although I would be okay with dub-con for my Shield Ring prompt, i.e. arranged marriage wedding-night sex, in which some or all participants may not be completely on board) and I also do not want any soulbond/soulmate AUs. In general, I'm fine with explicit sex, but also perfectly happy with no smut at all.

For artists--I apologize, but I never know how to craft specific prompts for art. I'd love art based on any of the scenarios below, though.

Specific prompts for fic:

The Shield Ring, Gerd, Gille: We only get to see glimpses of the relationship between Gerd and Gille from Frytha's pov. I'd like to see more about them--they both seem to have acquiesced easily to their marriage, but perhaps originally one or both of them didn't want to? How does Gille's distant relationship with his father play into it? They seem to be friends, but are they attracted to one another too? Is the wedding night horribly awkward? How does Gille feel about their baby? Post-canon fic could be interesting too, maybe seeing what happens when Gille becomes chief.

Dawn Wind, Beornwulf and his family: We always see these characters through Owain's eyes, and I'd be interested in a fic from either Beornwulf or one (or more) of his family's pov. It could be set either before Owain arrives or after. It could explore events we see in the book or events that are not in canon.

Eagle's Egg
, Vedrix and Cordaella: I'd love to see these characters, especially Vedrix, explored a bit more. I'd love a fic set before they come to Ebucarum (I hope I'm remembering correctly that's where the story is set!) in particular. It seems like Vedrix may have had a tough time, given his disability, and I'd love to see more about how he became an artist. Also, more about his relationship with his sister. If you prefer a fic set in the canon period, I'd be interested in their lives during the three years Quintus was away. Did Vedrix try to get Cordaella to give up on Quintus? Was he supportive? What is life like for them in Ebucarum?

On Feb 29, signups open for [community profile] sutcliff_swap , an exchange fest that I've been co-modding for a number of years now. Rosemary Sutcliff was a British author who wrote mainly young adult historical fiction. Many of her books are set in Roman Britain, although there is an occasional medieval setting and some set farther back. Although technically "young adult," I think they are tremendously engaging for adults as well. And they are rich canon for the fic writer or fan artist. Almost every book has a slashable pairing, there is tons of loyalty kink, and many intriguing side characters to explore. Although most of the novels have a male MC, there are strong female characters to be found as well.

The books are pretty quick reads, and you only need to request/offer one for the fest. Two of my personal favorites are Outcast (h/c galore!!!) and The Eagle of the Ninth (slavery, loyalty, wolf cubs!). Both of these and others of her works are available on Kindle, so you'd have time to read it before the fest.

We'd love to have new people join us! (and for those on my flist who are already Sutcliff converts, I hope you are all planning to participate!!)

Click the banner to go to the fest page, which has details on schedule and FAQ.

I'm ace, and there's a lot about sexual attraction that eludes me. But the one that puzzles me the most is kissing. I can understand why someone would want to have sex with another person, and I can even kind of get kissing other parts of a person's body, like their neck. But kissing on the mouth? I just cannot understand it. It is so very unappealing to me and yet it is such a default romantic/sexual gesture. Such a default, in fact, that I have never really come across much of an explanation of why people like it. Descriptions I've read of kissing usually go for describing the texture of the other person's lips, how they taste (and I am always rather doubtful of the often flowery nature of those descriptions), and I guess the general intimacy of it? But is that really it? It's almost always presented as simply a given--you are attracted to a person, therefore you naturally want to kiss them.

So for anyone who does enjoy kissing and doesn't mind explaining exactly what you like about it, I would be very interested to hear your perspective.

[personal profile] mekare inspired me to finish a Detective L wip I had started awhile ago. It's OT3--Luo Fei/Xiaoman/Ben Jieming, explicit, femdom, and featuring Xiaoman pegging Luo Fei. Basically pwp porn. :D Read it here

I'm always thrilled to receive a surprise notification that someone has done a podfic of something I wrote.

kalakirya did a lovely reading of my Guardian fic, Helpless, which is set after ep 33 and features lots of h/c and Zhao Yunlan looking after Shen Wei.

I've had the "never use one-syllable names alone" drummed into me, but I am now confused about how to handle spelling out two-syllable names. For example, is it Kun Lun or Kunlun? Guo Chang Cheng or Guo Changcheng? or in Detective L, would it be Qin Xiaoman or Qin Xiao Man? Which is preferred? Does it make any difference? I've seen it done both ways.

I'm sure this has been answered somewhere on the internet before, but I was hoping my flist can save me from trawling Google. :)

For myself, the answer to the first is Zhao Yunlan. I find it very difficult to get his often flippant, teasing attitude right, especially in dialogue.

For the second, I haven't really written Wang Zheng and Sang Zan much. So probably Lin Jing.

The third is hands down the Regent. Uggh--so hard.

I was watching ep 3 today, and was struck once again by ZYL's people skills. The first time he meets Professor Zhang, he notes how she is overly apologetic and connects that to either low self esteem or past trauma. In contrast, Shen Wei keeps insisting that she has nothing to do with the crime, and that one of the three students who we find out later was involved in raping Professor Zhang is a "sincere and warm" person. ZYL comments that although Shen Wei has studied many living things, he is lacking in the area of studying human beings.

Other moments also support the idea that Shen Wei does not always have great interpersonal skills. For example, the way he "comforts" Zhu Hong about her unrequited feelings for ZYL. I think he is really trying to comfort her, but is obviously doing a terrible job.

However, I think his relationship with Li Qian is quite different in this respect. He notices that she is stressed and unhappy; he finds ways to comfort her about her grandmother, etc.  And of course, his relationship with ZYL, where he is quite observant of ZYL's emotions.

So, I'm interpreting Shen Wei as the sort of person who does better in long-lasting, deep relationships where he spends a lot of time with an individual and comes to know them and feel comfortable with them, as opposed to ZYL who can connect with people much faster. For this interpretation, I am assuming that Shen Wei has known Li Qian for a while and she has been his grad assistant for a while too.

In a related note, I love how swiftly Shen Wei becomes super concerned over Zhao Yunlan's health. We're only on ep 3, but Shen Wei is already chastising ZYL for eating sweets when he has a cold. <3<3<3

What is the name of the game that Zhu Jiu is playing, with the wooden pieces?

Also, am I correct that the Longevity Dial grows bigger? When Li Qian is wearing it as a necklace, it is smaller, but then at the very end, Lin Jing comments that it has grown, and I think that it is definitely bigger, yes?

I was also quite struck this time around with how tense and antagonistic the initial meetings between ZYL and Hei Pao Shi are. Filled with passive-aggressive comments, where ZYL is always needling Hei Pao Shi, who gets rather tetchy with ZYL in turn. Of course, that aligns well with a history of a SID that is very anti-Dixingren, as well as a ZYL who lost his mother to a Dixingren.

Glasses?

So, do we think Shen Wei actually needs glasses or are they only part of his "disguise"?

Dear creator,

Thank you in advance for your creation! I want to stress that all of these pictures are merely suggestions/prompts and to give you a better idea of what I'm thinking of when I wax rhapsodically about Shen Wei's clothes. Sleeve garters and more behind the cut:

The past two days at work have been exhausting and stressful. I need happy things! So have two cute Guardian-related vids:

1. I'm not entirely sure what's going on in this vid, but I gather it's something along the lines of Zhao Yunlan begging and cajoling Shen Wei into being his wife partner and then Shen Wei realizing what a handful Zhao Yunlan is to take care of. :D Regardless, it has many of my favorite scenes and I like the way they're edited together.

2. A collection of Zhu Yilong smiling. Shen Wei makes an appearance. There is also a lapful of puppies.

I'm putting this discussion behind the cut because it contains spoilers for Episodes 38 through 40.

I have a lot of Ideas for short little vignettes set at various points in the series. They aren't really enough to develop into a full fic, so I'm posting them as stand-alone chapters under the general title A Variety of Occurrences in Dragon City.

The first chapter is "Shen Wei gives Zhao Yunlan a taste of his own medicine" and features lollipops and exam grading.

The second chapter is "Zhao Yunlan's encounter with Shen Wei's suit and sleeve garters" and features sensual undressing and my ode to Shen Wei's suits.

There are some spoilers for episodes 34 and 35 in the first chapter, no spoilers in the second chapter.
