Textures and temperatures-- interesting! I can see the intensity of sensation too. And you're right that it's a convenient trope. I feel like kissing is at the top of the hierarchy of cues-- like if a couple never kisses, they aren't *really* in love. Which is ridiculous, but I feel it's very prevalent.
