At the start of the month I entertained the fleeting thought of trying to post every day in July, especially with [community profile] sunshine_revival (in which I have in no way participated) going on, but. Well. *gestures at current date* And as we all know, something-something-only-perfect-results-matter, etc. etc. etc.

But here. It's Friday. The world is terrifying, but at least for this moment the sun is out. I spent most of my workday in a style guide meeting, which was genuinely pretty fun; tonight we're seeing Ginny and Kas because this week it's better for them than our usual Saturday hangout.

Tomorrow the (very) wee farmers' market that's only a few blocks away is getting underway for the season. I have ambitions of actually rolling out of bed and walking over in hopes of strawberries, even though tomorrow and Sunday are also Eevee community day in Pokemon Go, so I'm also hoping to leave the house those afternoons. Leaving the house twice in one day is not exactly a thing that happens often, and as a result, the prospect of it is exhausting. ^^; But here's hoping!

There's been zero doubt for a long time now that my only actual investment in Pokemon Go is the pursuit of shinies, and community days are the best chance to get shinies of a given critter, and Eevee, see, has EIGHT possible evolutions, so if there's any faint hope of ever having a full set of shinies of those, well, it's this weekend.

(I can't remember if I've said here that this is a crystalized perfect demonstration of why it's really, really good that I don't gamble. I'm usually pleased when I catch a new-to-me Pokemon, but it's pretty minor. But rather than setting the game aside, since it mostly hasn't resulted in me actually getting outside and walking much more than I had been, the hope of catching a shiny critter keeps me opening it back up. Nobody get me into slot machines, okay? [That sounds facetious, but I mean it very seriously.])

That's all I've got right now. Stay well, friends.

Theme: Working together

Summary: Winona is called to fix the cock-up of the Yorktown's engines. She uses one of the science-bitches to help her do it.

Reccer's Notes: This fandom has many versions of Winona Kirk. The one you get here is the engineer who does NOT fuck around and can fix anything you throw at her. She is irreverent and badass. And, in this particular story, she is wonderfully, delightfully contrasted with Spock, who is helping her fix the Yorktown engines. Yes, Spock is the science bitch.

I really can't say much more because I'm laughing too hard rereading the story in order to write this rec. Laz perfects the art of proving that swearing isn't what you do when you lack imagination. Every cuss word in this fic is a brilliant gem of hilarious, creative, and accurate speech.

Like every ridiculous fic that is very, very good, this one makes you believe that this Winona Kirk is not only possible, but is absolutely in character. It also makes you believe that this Spock is possible and will call Winona Overlord and let her call him Tiny Science-bitch.

We have a heatwave here, but a short one thankfully. It should be back to normal 23°C tomorrow. I spent the whole day today eating ice cream, drinking water and watching cute things to distract myself from that exhausting heat.

Seeing new pics from Q3 of Only Friends Dream On shooting helped, too. But wow, Aou, have mercy on me. There is hot enough here as it is, even without you being all bad boy DJ in a see-through shirt. 😊

The Ex-Morning

7th episode aired today, and surprisingly for me I’m enjoying this drama more and more with each new episode.

More with spoilers here.Mix’s cameo as a vet! And he looked gorgeous, I can’t wait for Only Friends Dream On.

Also, wow, they made me sympathize with Phi. Yeah, what Tam did was shitty. I knew he had to have a reason for breaking up with Phi by sms, and then blocking him everywhere and not talking to him for years. But his reason absolutely doesn’t justify his behavior IMO. Couldn’t he just talk with Phi honestly? I fricking hate ‘I’m breaking up with you for your own good’ trope.

Speaking of cameos – I really, really hope we’ll get Boom’s cameo in the last episodes as a current or future boyfriend of Aou’s character. GMMTV lately loves to do that with their fixed ships, if only one half of a ship is in a drama. Till now we had Force’s cameo in Only Boo, Sea’s cameo in Sweet Tooth Good Dentist, and New’s in Break Up Service.

The Next Prince

I’m getting bored. I thought I would love this drama, but something is not working for me. Prince/his loyal bodyguard is my kind of ship, I feel like I should love Khanin/Charan, and yet I basically lost all interest in them. I blame the script, it’s just not good. Pacing is bad, too. For a long time I felt like almost nothing really was happening story wise. Also where is Ava? She disappeared completely lately.

I still am very much invested in Ramil/Paytai, their relationship is my kind of complicated and angsty and hot, and for them I will watch it to the end. But yeah, for me this drama definitely didn’t live up to my expectations.

I also started MilkLove’s new GL drama Whale Store xoxo. Two episodes aired for now and I liked them. Milk looks so beautiful that I spent the first half of the 1st episode just staring and sighing ‘she’s soooo gorgeous’ in an awed voice. Heh... The drama itself is cute and enjoyable, and perfect for relaxing on Wednesday evenings.

And yay, I did manage to finish something, too, finally. Two dramas, actually. One was the 2nd season of Tengu no Daidokoro. I loved it. It was as good and beautiful, and touching as the 1st season. And all the food porn made me so hungry at the most inopportune times, like for instance after 9 p.m. 😊

I also watched a short kdrama on Netflix called Mercy For None. I did enjoy it, but it was very brutal, dark and bloody, so it took me a while to watch all of it, even though it has only 7 episodes. It got a bit repetitive in the second half, but it satisfied my love for complicated and obsessive sibling relationships. And the fights were excellent.

It’s about an ex-gangster Nam Gi Jun who left the underworld in dramatic circumstances 11 years ago. And now he returns to uncover the truth about the mysterious death of his beloved younger brother (who in present time was the second in command in Gi Jun’s former gang). And to ruthlessly take revenge on people responsible.

I haven’t seen So Ji Sub, who plays Gi Jun, in anything before. And he is very good here. Very charismatic in that tortured, brooding and silent type of way. And it was great to see Lee Jun Hyuk playing someone so different from his green flag character in Love Scout. Here he guest stars in a few episodes as Gi Jun’s younger brother Gi Seok.

It's that time again! More thoughts on media:

The Truth Season 3 case 8 (I think, the numbering is confusing now)— this case featured Chinese style horror, and it was very creepy but in a fun way. I also enjoyed the earthly 20th inspired costumes

I Got Abducted by Aliens and Now I'm Trapped in a Rom-Com by Kimberly Lemming— I’m writing about this even though I didn’t finish it because I think some of you might enjoy this. The first bit was really fun! The main character is a wildlife biology PhD student, who when she finds herself on an alien planet is upset that it's full of dinosaurs all from different time periods from each other! (Very relatable really) The book has a very fun voice. Unfortunately it ends up becoming too much sex for me.

The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea by Axie Oh— A Korean inspired fantasy YA novel about a girl who chooses to sacrifice herself in place of the designated Sea God’s Bride and enters a spirit world full of mythical beings and complex politics. (I read this even though the mom is dead, and really there’s no narrative reason for it) This was lovely and very atmospheric, though the ending left me a little dissatisfied. (Content Note: Infant death)

Painted Devils by Margaret Owen— Second book in the Little Thieves trilogy. Very fun and twisty in a similar way to the 1st book.

Kpop Demon Hunters — It's an animated movie about a kpop girl band that are magical girl-sque demon hunters, there's lot of musical numbers.A Koren friend of mine described it as “an American movie set in Korea” and I think that’s spot on. She specifically complained about how the worldbuiling/theology feels too christian. It doesn't fully work through the consequences of all the violence but the flight scenes are very swooshy and fun, and I liked the themes a lot. I also really liked the female friendship aspect.

I finished taking the laundry out of this basket & put it down on its side for Purrcy investigation. It was worth snooping in, but not really good for long-term use, he found.

What's that in the sky? he wondered, after several days of rain & thunder-growler attacks.

Purrcy the tuxedo tabby stands in a brown cloth laundry bin lying on its side. He peers out and up at the sunlight coming from the skylight above, his whiskers looking long but rather doubtful.

My back continues to be better, while not being anything like *all* better. Prednisone has the reputation of being Side Effects City, my biggest ones so far are dry mouth making my voice all scratchy, and a certain amount of ADHD/mania type behavior, trouble settling & sleeping. Only 3 more days of tapering to go, though.

Amid all The Horrors ramping up & up, here's something that's given me active joy in the past couple of days: Sir Ian McKellan joining Scissor Sisters onstage at Glastonbury Festival:

My god, he's still got that full Royal Shakespeare voice.

It makes me cry a bit with joy at the end there, seeing Sir Ian being able to lead his people in a public celebration of being out & proud. And to see an old man being *venerated*, for once, admired for achievements but in this case also as a symbol of what people like those in the audience can have with age: a *full* life, a *long* life, a life with everything in it, despite what they may have been told. You don't have to be young to be queer, it's not a phase, it's part of a complete human life.

What I've recently finished reading:

Lamentation by C.J. Sansom, the 6th Shardlake novel. This is all about the heresy hunts in the last few years before Henry VIII's death - one faction wanted to go back towards Catholicism, one wanted a radical re-imagining of religion and social structures, and if you wanted to stay in the regime's good graces, you walked the narrow path of "the King is the divinely ordained leader of the Church, and whatever he says goes." Warning for historical burning of heretics, plus canon-typical violence; also for weird religion and contentious legal cases. Matthew Shardlake still has a crush on the queen (Katherine Parr).

What I'm reading now:

My hold on Katherine Addison's The Tomb of Dragons came in, so that. Just barely started.

What I recently finished watching:

American Primeval, which, huh, I've never before encountered media in which the Mormons are the bad guys. (This is not a spoiler. It's pretty clear from the get-go, but it gets more pointed and cartoon-villainy toward the end.) Definitely violent and gory, though also it felt very clearly written to Tug The Heart Strings (and then, often, deliberately kill the character it's just tried to make you care about) at which at least for me it failed to do. I liked Abish, Two Moons, and Captain Edwin Dellinger, and James Bridger amused the hell out of me, but - I mostly enjoyed it, but I don't feel it was superlative. I got tired of the filter to wash out colors so it looked almost old-photo sepia.

I did enjoy the historical setting of the Mormon War; as I mentioned last time, I researched it for my Yuletide story, and I think it's just an interesting time, the settlement/colonization of western North America.

What I'm about to start watching:

Murderbot! We always wait until enough episodes are out that we can watch ~every other day and not have to wait.

What I'm playing now:

Lorelei and the Laser Eyes, which was recommended to me as a "spooky atmospheric puzzle game", and I'm enjoying it a lot. You play as a mysterious woman who has come to a mysterious hotel full of locked doors in what might be Germany in 1963, at the request of a mysterious man for reasons of ??? I told my brother about it because it's cheap in the summer sale at Steam, and he decided it sounded good so he is playing it now, a bit behind my progress but because of the nonlinearity he's ahead of me in some things. We're trying to give each other elliptical hints when needed.

Today I finished watching Patlabor and it was a very satisfying series to say the least, even though the final episode felt more like a normal instance than having closure after all the aventures and misadventures the team went through. I do believe the episode before the last would had been better left as THE last episode since it closed so nicely in comparison, but I digress.

But for now...
